14581 Marsali Shirvan Circa 1890

Category:
Shirvan is located just to the south of the Caucasus mountain range and is to the east of Gendje and to the west of the Baku peninsula. Local weaving tradition in this region excelled in exploring the numerous possible variations using a limited palette of color to maximal effect.
Description

The area rugs and a very limited supply of antique runners woven in the Shirvan district are the most finely knotted and sophisticated antique carpets of the Caucasus region. For example, this iconic Caucasian Shirvan antique rug is striking in its elemental simplicity. Its innovative twin medallions are rendered in stark clarity upon a backdrop of the deepest indigo, giving each facet of this antique Caucasian Shirvan rug’s original geometric ornamentation great graphic impact. As in so many of the most accomplished works of art, not a single line is wasted, as all aspects are brought together with a natural, profoundly satisfying balance and symmetry.
